Deck Cost Per Square Foot
The short answer: $30–90 per square foot installed in 2026, depending mostly on material and height. Here are the ranges by material, what they include, and what pushes a real quote around inside them.

2026 deck prices per square foot by material
| Material | Decking boards only | Full deck, installed | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pressure-treated lumber | $4–6 / sq ft | $30–55 / sq ft | Lowest build cost; stain/seal every 1–2 years |
| Cedar | $5.50–8 / sq ft | $35–60 / sq ft | Natural rot resistance; greys if left unoiled |
| Composite | $8–12 / sq ft | $45–75 / sq ft | No staining; 25-year+ warranties common |
| Hardwood (ipe / tropical) | $11–16 / sq ft | $55–90 / sq ft | Densest and longest-lived; slowest to install |
Installed ranges assume a rectangular deck at low height with standard railing on the open sides, US national-average labor. "Boards only" is the decking surface material — framing, footings, hardware and labor are what turn it into the installed figure.
The six factors that move the price
1. Material. The biggest single lever — the spread between pressure-treated and hardwood is roughly 2× on the same footprint. Composite sits in the middle on install price and lowest on maintenance.
2. Height. A deck over 4 ft needs longer posts, deeper or more footings, more stairs and code-required railing on every open edge — and slower, scaffolded labor. Going from 2 ft to 8 ft typically adds 25–40% to the same deck.
3. Railing. At $20–45 per linear foot in materials (double it installed), railing on three sides of a mid-size deck adds $1,500–$3,500. Cable and aluminum systems cost more than wood balusters.
4. Stairs. Each step is structure, stringers, treads and often its own footing and railing run. A tall deck's staircase alone can cost $800–$2,500.
5. Site and demolition. Sloped lots, poor access, rocky soil and removing an old deck all add labor and disposal fees that a per-square-foot average never sees.
6. Region. Labor is about half the bill, so metro and coastal labor markets price decks 20–40% above the national average; rural areas often come in below it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the average deck cost per square foot in 2026?
Across all materials, a professionally installed deck averages roughly $45–50 per square foot in 2026, but the material spread is wide: pressure-treated lumber $30–55, cedar $35–60, composite $45–75 and hardwood $55–90 per square foot installed. Ground-level decks sit at the low end of each range; tall decks at the high end.
Why do contractors quote such different prices for the same deck?
Because "the same deck" rarely is: height, railing length, stair count, footing depth, demolition of the old deck and regional labor rates each move the price by double-digit percentages. Two quotes $3,000 apart on a $10,000 deck usually differ in the railing, the stairs or the footings — ask for the itemized version and compare line by line.
How much can I save building the deck myself?
Labor is roughly half the installed cost, so a capable DIY build can save 40–50% — if your time is free and the work passes inspection. The materials side is where DIY budgets leak: under-counting boards, fasteners and concrete is the classic mistake, so run the board calculator before ordering.
Does a bigger deck cost less per square foot?
Usually yes. Fixed costs — mobilization, permits, the stair and the first footing row — are spread over more area, and framing gets more efficient. Doubling a deck from 100 to 200 sq ft typically raises the total by 70–85%, not 100%, so the per-square-foot price falls as size grows.
